Chocolate Cake Donuts

Chocolate Cake Donuts

Let me just start by saying, I'm pretty sure these donuts are straight from heaven. I've been wanting to find a really good, chocolate cake donut recipe for awhile. I love chocolate cake and I love donuts so it's pretty much a no-brainer. I dare you to type chocolate donuts or chocolate cake donuts in the Pinterest search field. You'll see there are a million recipes and I'm sure there are many, many tasty ones.

I narrowed my own search down based on the ingredients I already had in my house AND which donuts I thought looked the best. I don't know about you, but a lot of what "stops me in my tracks," when searching on Pinterest is how tasty the recipe looks in the photo. Since these turned out so perfectly, I wanted to make sure I did them justice in my own photos.

Speaking of the photos, I'm currently obsessed with compotes, the beautiful silver plated, dessert dish with a stem. I first saw these in various shapes, sizes and heights at Buvette, placed atop stacks of small plates. Compotes make such a statement, especially when showcasing a delicate dessert like a croissant or in this case, donuts! If they strike your fancy, you can find them on Etsy by searching: "silver plated compote."

CHOCOLATE CAKE DONUTS

Makes approximately 10 donuts (Wilton 6-cavity donut pan from Bed Bath & Beyond)

INGREDIENTS

DONUTS

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup mini chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 6 tablespoons sour cream
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

GLAZE

  • 2 cups confectioner's sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 6 tablespoon whole milk

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Combine the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Combine the wet ingredients in a medium mixing bowl and whisk.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry, stirring until just combined.
  5. Spray your donut pan with cooking spray and fill each cavity 3/4 of the way full.
  6. Bake for 8 minutes.
  7. Let donuts cool in the pan. THIS IS IMPORTANT. If they're too warm they'll break in half when dipping in the glaze. Hmm, how do I know this? :)
  8. In a medium sauce pan over low heat, combine the glaze ingredients above, stirring until well combined, then remove from heat.
  9. Dip each donut in the glaze to fully coat. I just did one side but you can certainly do both!
  10. Place on a cooling rack until dry.
